Grand Funk Railroad
Bio
The American group « Grand Funk Railroad » whose name originates from the Michigan Company, “Grand Trunk Western Railroad”, was formed in 1968 by guitarist, Mark Farner, drummer Don Brewer and base player Mel Schacher. The group experiences immediate success with the launching if their first album, “On Time” and from album to album the group hit the top of the American charts and in 1970 earned “Grand Funk Railroad” the title of the group with the most sold albums.
The “power trio” earned notorious success with “Survival” and “E Pluribus Funk” where the group says their particular style is focused on Mark Farner powerful voice, which is one of Grand Funk’s distinctive mark in the hard rock scene . Grand Funk’s style evolved even more with “Phoenic” all the while moving slowly away from hard rock to “funk”. Craig Frost joined the group once keyboards were added.
Named « The American Band », Grand Funk accumulated success after success over the years, with “We’re an American Band” and “Shinin’ on”, approaching more and more a rock FM sound. Grand Funk was the first American group to receive no less than 10 consecutive Platinum albums.
During their Millinium Tour, Mark Farner accepted to join Ringo Starr’s “All Starr Band” and follow that of a solo career. The remaining two band members recruited the singer Max Carl, drummer Tim Cashion and guitarist Bruce Kulick from “Kiss”. The newly formed group kept the original Grand Funk’s traditional style while rewriting a new chapter of Grand Funk’s musical history. Many argue that the group deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
